On Sunday, I returned to Philadelphia and spent the day exploring the Society Hill and Washington Square West neighborhoods.
For years on end, graffiti and murals can hold their own against Mother Nature’s onslaught of cold, heat, and precipitation. On the other hand, weather can quickly wreak devastation on wheatpastes, slaps, and stickers.
Several days ago Charm City Streets returned from a week-long photo tour of Art Basel 2016. The streets and avenues in the Wynwood neighborhood of Miami were chock full of phenomenal murals by renowned street artists, dope graffiti pieces by masterful writers, galleries containing even more incredible artwork, and much more.
Back in 2009, folks living in the Welling Court neighborhood of Queens asked Ad Hoc Art Gallery to help them clean up and enhance their community, and the Welling Court Mural Project was born. Every year since then, Ad Hoc Art invites artists from far and wide to help turn the neighborhood into an open-air art gallery. Their annual block party in June is a celebrated event.
